The Best Part of the Holiday

It's time for Rachel and I to get our tree! We always trek down to Delancey Street (the Geary and Divis location), saying that we want to support local charity, when really it's just the closest tree lot to our apartment. Last year we decided to save by getting The Tree Out Back, one the man assured us was behind the shed in the dark because 'it's the only one of its kind.' 'Never trust an ex-con selling you a Christmas tree' is a lesson we learned that night. Shelling out twenty bucks cash, we lugged it home on foot, took it to the back stairwell, and cut off the cords binding it. And it exploded. Pine needle shrapnel flew like so many kicked pigeons into the air, revealing in its wake the most lopsided tree in all the land. We pushed and tugged the newly released polio victim into our living room and began to rotate him, futiley trying to find 'his good side.' As we gave up and started decorating him, we felt a sort of kind affection, as one might toward a senile old man in the assisted living home, tying bows in his hair to make him pretty as he claps with excitement.

And now it is that time again. I hope they have another one Out Back waiting for us...because perfection is so overrated.
